SOVO// was born in South Los Angeles in 2017. The platform’s conception was brought about by a convergence of creatives, from a multitude of artistic backgrounds to employ experimental storytelling techniques with transformative results. In June 2021, after returning to a whole new world after the 15 month long citywide shutdown due to Coronavirus, SOVO// was reinvented under the new name Forecast. It was time for something new, however the quality and sheer amount of work achieved in 3 years at SOVO// laid a strong foundation for Forecast to begin.
SOVO// began as an independent art collective and quarterly print publication with an experimental format—publishing only original, analog content including stills on 35mm, 110, 116, 126, 120 and 4×5 film, 600 and FP-100c instant film, as well as motion on Super 8, 16mm, and VHS formats. Our signature production was the quarterly limited edition print magazine which was best known for its unique acrylic packaging. Unexpected formats and printing techniques allowed the viewer to feel the magazine itself as an artistic experience. Each issue was tailored to a different theme or topic of interest. To celebrate and share this creative output, each issue release was accompanied by an immersive event and exhibition.
SOVO// also published bespoke editions produced by two hand selected visual artists a year; planned without any rules or guidelines regarding format. In addition to these tangible objects, SOVO// hosted an ever-expanding online platform, managed a private collection of fine art, and offered an annual writers residency.
